Macworld® Mac® Upgrade and Repair Bible
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (September, 1998)
Author: Todd Stauffer

Excellent trouble shooting guide for Macs
I work doing technical support for virtually all facets of computing (Macs, IBM's, e-mail, Internet access, basic LAN, software and hardware problems, general "how to" questions in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, Mac OS 8, Windows 95, etc..). This book, "Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible" has already been a very useful tool in assisting in troubleshooting basic Mac problems that I run into on a daily basis. After one reading session of reading this extensive book, I was able to successfully troubleshoot one of the problems that I run into on a daily basis. The problem was that a person was having a problem with their Macs booting up to a question mark on the screen. This sometimes denotes that the driver or software that tells the Mac how to access the hard drive has become corrupt, in which case the user can boot off the system software CD, go into the utilities folder and select drive setup and perform a drive update. I never would have known this had I not read this book. I continue to learn new things each and every day I read this wonderful resource guide for troubleshooting and just overall general personal knowledge. I also own the Mac OS 8 Bible which has been very helpful as well. I recommend this book and all books that IDG Books publish. My next book will probably be Photoshop 4 Bible by the same publishers. Well done!!

Great resource; makes the technical simple!
As MacAddict's Ask Us columnist and author of Apple Confidential, I'm happy to recommend Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible by Todd Stauffer. This massive 942-page paperback helps you identify the bottlenecks in your system, then plan, perform, and troubleshoot the entire upgrade process. Stauffer not only covers increasing your raw processing power by replacing your Mac's CPU, he also discusses the pros and cons of adding memory, hard drives, input devices, networking capability, and a whole range of peripheral possibilities. At just $39.99, Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible is a lot cheaper and more reliable than most consultants, plus it comes with a CD-ROM loaded with more than 50 useful freeware, shareware, and demo tools.

Excellent Reference
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about the Macintosh. After reading this extensive, well written and documented text I only added to the knowledge I have gathered over the years. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible is a fantastic resource guide for upgrading, troubleshooting, and general tips on the Macintosh. After reading the book I had no problems installing a high speed SCSI card in my own Mac. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible contains a wide range of useful information and guides the reader through the implementation this information (e.g., troubleshooting SCSI devise ID's). I found the section about digital cameras especially helpful when I started looking at the specifications of various models in order to make a knowledgeable choice about which one to buy. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible covers just about any add-on device (e.g., scanners, printers), how they work, and how they interface with the Mac to produce the best results. Within the rapidly changing area of Macintosh technology this book is a great reference for Mac users who want to understand the technology and make the best use of it. I found reading this book a wonderful learning experience, as are all of the "Mac Bible" series books from IDG.

WHY AM I ON THIS PLANET?
Published in Paperback by Vantage Press (April, 1999)
Authors: Todd M. Oberlander and Todd Oberlander
Average review score:

This book has been an immeasurable blessing to me.
Today's modern culture is so full of colorful euphemisms and hyper-adjectives that it has become increasingly difficult to separate the ultra-mega from the standard. Those who still remember the term "acid test", surely remember the need to understand the truth and separate it from all the hype. Even the writings of both secular and Christian cultures have found a common ground in the over sensationalizing, for the sake of selling.

Fortunately, there is still an "acid test", or should we say "water test", life giving waters, that is. The words of truth, God's truth, have a very distinctive quality unmatched by anything ever written, sold, bartered, or over-sensationalized. God's word can not be altered in any way without tarnishing its glory and perfection. Anyone who has ever been blessed with even a single fruitful discussion of the spirit, can tell you of these words which are truly life giving waters. They are found carefully placed between the front and back covers of the Holy Bible.

This weekend was very special to me. It was special because I had the chance to read a million book bestseller co-written by no less than 6 Ph.D's. The book even had an accompanying video. After reading this much acclaimed book, I felt emptier than before I had started. The self-promotion and glorification was so absolutely exhaustive, it overshadowed anything else the authors may have been trying to convey to their readers. Sadly, this trend seems to be increasing at an alarming rate, even among Christian writers, some of whom are coughing out as many as 12 books a year. Best sellers of nothingness.

Fortunately for all of us, God works through those who are willing and open to His direction. Like those early writers so powerfully inspired by God, today's Christian writers are equally blessed in the messages they carry. The life-giving quality, the revitalization, and the reality of hope carry forth through God's truth for those that keep their focus on God's will and nothing else.

Such is the case for the servant Todd, as he shares the greatest blessings known to man, through the power and grace of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. In his book, "Why am I on this planet?", Todd carefully and humbly shares the gospel of truth, hope, and forgiveness through his own walk with the Lord. The reality of Todd's walk, his life, and his Savior are compelling testimonies to the glory of God. The life giving quality of the Almighty God is ever present throughout the book.

To show the contrast I must be honest. I never finished the bestseller. I had to put it down for I felt it draining to the very spirit God so mercifully nurtures in me. I also had to put down Mr. Oberlander's book, but for quite a different reason. The living truth was so irresistible and overpowering, I had to stop reading while my soul thirstily drank in the living waters of my Father's Word. I will not waste time by taking excerpts out of the book, for they are all an equal part of the whole. Wisdom is known by its fewness of words. To my knowledge, not a single writer made an earthly profit for his/her contribution to the Bible, for their profit was in serving their God and Father. Yet, they, as are all Christians, an inseparable part of the whole - the body of Christ.

In a day and age filled with emptiness, deceit, and despair, I am eternally grateful for the honest writings of God's humble servants. As such, I cannot give God & Todd Oberlander's book a rating, for there is no earthly standard by which God's glory, providence, or grace can be measured. I can merely say it has been an immeasurable blessing to me, which I will share with many in the coming years.

Jim D. Holdahl

This book has given me a whole new perspective on life.
I've been in this world for more than seventy years. Some folks might consider me to be a knowledgeable person, but let me tell you this. This book has given me a whole new perspective on life. There's a lot in this book that most of us don't ever give a second thought about.

This book was worth purchasing.
It was just another ordinary day. I was out for my daily walk when someone came up to me and handed me a card that told me about this book. I thought it would be a book full of jokes or something funny given the title. I visited Amazon.com to see what it really was. The book seemed interesting so I ordered it. I never thought it would answer so many of the questions that I had about life. This book has made a difference in my life. Just think, I almost decided not to go for a walk that day. I hope the person who told me about this book finds this because I would like to thank them.

Very good book!
I like to read rock-n-roll books whether I like the band or not. I like Free, but like a lot of people, only knew their hit song and the later Paul Rodgers groups. My point is: If you're a casual fan, this is still an excellent book with the kind of inside story that makes for some great reading; if you're a serious fan, this is an even more engaging book because it's very thorough but never boring. The fact that they interviewed the surviving band members gives it the credibility that so many other rock books lack. The pictures are incredible too, and not just some little middle section with 20 photos. These shots are interspersed throughout the book on every page, thus truly illustrating their awesome story! Heavy Load is highly recommended!

Fisher's Hornpipe
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd Pap) (April, 1984)
Author: Todd McEwen
Average review score:

I wish McEwen would write more...
I first learned of Todd McEwen through his short stories (Granta Magazine most frequently) and enjoyed his style so much that I was compelled to find all that he'd written. Amazon found the out of print "Fisher's Hornpipe" and sent it to me before a train trip to Boston (how appropos) --and I laughed the entire time. Fisher is a loveable, likeable character who charmed me into reading late into the night. The unique form Mr. McEwen chose (sans punctuation) adds to the fun. If you have a sense of humor that borders on the odd...you'll like this. Just beware if you start talking to your pens!

I will always love this book.
I bought this book for relatively nothing compared to the amount of laughs it had in store. It was not only funny but also had a strangely twisted story that kept me going. In addition, Fisher's strange love for Mr. Squeaky, his violin, and hatred for material things reminded me of how complex, yet lovable, a human can be. it reminded me that humor could exist anywhere. This book was truly a very strange work of art.

Still laughing after all these years!
I have to agree with all of the other rave reviews here. Fisher's Hornpipe is one of the funniest books I've ever read. When it first came out, I was working at a bookstore and when I saw it on the shelf I started reading it on my lunch break. Had to buy it, told all of my friends about it and we all thought this was the start of a major career for Mr. McEwen. Sadly, I've not seen another book by him. It's a shame this book has been let to go out-of-print. I urge you to do an out-of-print search for a trip through New England that you will NEVER forget.

Help! I'm Trapped in an Alien's Body

Help! I'm Trapped In An Alien's Body
Jake Sherman switched bodies with an alien. The alien is a funny looking one, a dorky alien, from a planet where aliens sit around and eat junk food all day long. That sounds like a pretty cool life to jake, but Jake has two choices. Would he want to be a 98 pound kid or is he really going to stay like a dork?I think the book was great. You will have to read the book to find how this story will end.

Help! Do you want to read a funny story?
In Help! I'm Trapped in an Alien's Body!, Jake Sherman has switched bodies with a funny looking alien. This dorky alien is from a planet where liens sit around watching tv and eating junk food all day long. Jjake Sherman is a 12 year old boy who changes bodies with a funny looking alien. He is on a great chase because the alien runs off with Jake's body. The reason why I like this book is because it is funny. The author chose great characters such as Jake Sherman, Jessica Sherman, his sister, and Howard, the alien. I recommend this book for people who like to laugh because this is a funny story.

This is a good and funny book.
This book is called _Help! I'm Trapped in an Alien's Body_ because Mr. Dirksen, a teacher, invented a machine that allows you to change bodies with someone. The main characters in the book are are Howard the Alien, Jake Sherman, Jessica Sherman, Josh, and Andy. My favorite character is Howard. Howard came to Earth because his planet is ugly and he was searching the galaxy for planets to visit. The fun starts when Jake uses Mr. Dirksen's machine -- by accident -- and changes bodies with Howard. Howard's body looks funny because on his planet all he does is sit around watching TV and eating junk food. I'll let you find out all the funny things that happen when you read the book yourself.

HoL

Authors: Christopher Elliott, Todd Shaughnessy, and Daniel Thron
Average review score:

Hands down the funniest RPG out there.
I enjoyed HOL more than I thought possible. The system is relatively easy to use (it is a little bumpy for my taste), but the entertainment value of the book alone is completely worth it. The companion, "Buttery Wholesomeness" is equally as quirky, and definately adds what is lacking to HOL. Character creation is such fun that my cohorts and I made several, just for giggles. Fun to play, a riot to read, if you are a gamer, I recommend this for a light-hearted spin on the atypical RPG.

The Most Entertaining RPG I've played.
Hol is one of the most interesting RPGs I've ever played. Let me give you an example. In my first game of Hol, at one point, we were stuck in a 10 by 10 stone room. We had no way to get out. Or so we thought. My friend summoned about 200 children, which he ordered to repeatedly run into the wall. AND IT WORKED! After playing in games where characters could grow extra limbs, make their voice sound more important than the voice of God, use sarcasm to make a meteor grow a face and cry, eat an obscenely large, unedible object, engage a huge evil enemy in a game of childish insults, buy Tito Puente at your local Caldor, or roll dice to die, it's hard to go back to Mage and Werewolf. Good job, Black Dog/White Wolf!

My kids love it!
With all of the complex, rules heavy games on the market, it was a pure joy to be able to teach my two kids, ages 9 and 11, to play HoL! The rules are insanely simple, make for fast, exciting play, and allow you to totally immerse yourself in playing. I recommend this game for any parent wishing to teach their kids to roleplay, and as an educational tool as well! No better fun to be found anywhere! Both books are fantastic, with great writing.. you will be laughing for hours!
HoL, so good the entire family can play!

The Von Hoffmann Bros.' Big Damn Book of Sheer Manliness
Published in Paperback by General Pub Group (May, 1998)
Authors: Todd Von Hoffmann, the Von Hoffmann Brothers, Brant Von Hoffmann, Colby Allerton, Todd Von Hoffman, and Brant Von Hoffman
Average review score:

Testpsterone drips from its pages!
As the only female in the house, I read this book in self defense. Sure enough John Wayne, poker dogs ( my son collects them) beer, sports and cars are all in here. What I like is that the VonHofann Brothers don't take themselves all that seriously-- ps my boys also bowl and fight over who will drive the truck. This book sums up modern day manliness!

A great starter kit for those who have yet to understand.
I recently bought this book for my soon to be seventeen year old son. On my way home, two of my friends reviewed it with me over a beer (one a Navy jet pilot the other an Oxford graduate). We howled all the way throught the book (and bought another couple of rounds of course). My friends both went out and got copies of the book for themselves, sons and wifes.

The next day my youngest brother (I have six of them) and I put together a manliness starter kit for my son's birthday present using ideas from the book. Who couldn't use a can of WD-40, 10 of the movies from the best movies of all times list (Spartacus, The Magnificent Seven, Seargent York, Animal House, Blazing Saddles, etc.), baked beans, Blackcat Fireworks and more? We packed it all in a big Cory's Snail and Slug Death box and wrapped it in brown paper and rope. I'm not sure my son appreciated all the fun we had doing it, but he will one day.

This book is a real hoot, and in our experience pretty damn accurate. Let the male bonding begin.

The Perfect Father's Day Present
I swear on a jar of Lawry's Lemon Pepper that every boy should be given a copy of this book upon entering puberty. Women have "Our Bodies, Our Selves", and we have THIS!

I gave a copy of this book to my father, who rarely if ever reads books at all, and he read it cover to cover, three times!

Everything that is TRULY masculine is here! From classic manly films ("Sparticus", "The Quiet Man", "Rollerball", "Blade Runner", "Citizen Kane", "Road Warrior (Mad Max 2)"), to recipies for salt steak and "colon cleaner chili" (burns going in AND coming out!), to detailed info on booze, fighter planes, cards, catapults and spud cannons, Nevada's (legal) brothels, fishing, Coleman camping supplies, Swiss Army knives, guns, cigars, WD-40 and (gotta love the name) Corry's Slug and Snail Death (!), this book has it ALL! There's even biographies on John Wayne, Victor McLaglen, the greats who played in John Ford's films, and even Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (the genius who painted the poker playing dogs)!

If this book had a chest, it would have hair and tattoos! It's like every bar-room boast, "first dirty joke you've ever heard", boy scout camp fire story, beer commercial and pick-up truck in one!

So, come on! Park the amphibious 4X4 in the garage, put down those power tools, fire up that BBQ grill, open a cold one, and read the most politically incorrect tome to grace a coffee table. By God, this book is a work of genius!

Help! I'm Trapped in my Gym Teacher's Body
Very Good! Very funny! I think the way Todd Strasser made it so reasonable for kids is great. He made it so funny and easy to understand, that it is reasonable for anyone. I think this book is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. This book is about a 12 year old boy, Jake, who has 2 best friends, Josh and Andy, who like to fool around and get in trouble. But when Jake switches bodies with his new big muscular gym teacher, it can get worse and it can get funny. The best part was when the gym teacher's girlfriend went out with Jake instead of Bruno(the gym teacher)! I really enjoyed this book and so will you.

Help! I'm trapped in my gym teachers body
I like how Mr. Braun stuck up for Jake when he tricked Barry Dunn and his friends. Jake's friend's Josh and Andy got in there and were as loyal as friends get to the very end. I think this book is excellent! At first I thought it was a true story! You did a great job Todd Strasser! ...

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!
i absoluetly love the Help! I'm trapped.... series!!!!! I especially like "Help!I'm trapped in my gym teachers body. I love this series because it covers an interesting topic and i know everyone wants switch bodies with someone at one time or another in their life.

American Medical Association Family Medical Guide
Published in Hardcover by Random House (September, 1994)
Authors: Charles B. Clayman, AMA, and James S. Todd
Average review score:

A hypochondriac's dream!
Okay, I'm not a hypochondriac, sorry. My mother purchased an earlier edition of this book, published in 1982. I had that edition until I recently ordered this one to replace it.

I should preface the rest of my review by saying that I have a definite interest in medicine, and planned to become a paramedic. I did take my EMT-B certification (Emergency Medical Techinician-Basic) a few years ago, and this book was one of my resources for studying for tests and answering homework questions. So, I have a clear INTEREST in all things medical, and really enjoy just browsing through this book.

I find that I look things up in this book at least once a week. Sometimes I'll hear the name of a disease or illness on TV and out of curiousity to know more, I'll look it up. If I have a strange symptom, I'll look that up. I am single with no children, but this book would be an invaluable first-aid resource for a family with children or for anyone taking care of a sick or elderly friend or family member.

My favorite aspects of this book are the glossary of medical terms, the very complete and easy-to-use index, and the medication section. Several times I have looked up a medication to determine if it is safe to take with other medications, or to see if side effects are normal.

I think every household should have a copy of this book. Most of the information is timeless and very informative.

Fabulous starting point and resource
I am a nurse practitioner and find this book to be very useful as a resource for my patients. When a patient or family member comes down with a new diagnosis, most people want more information to learn more about it. I use this book as a teaching tool so that they can start to learn about their health and personal illnesses. It lays a good foundation for initial health information. I personally like its emphasis on preventive care. It can also help you decide whether an ache or pain you have is serious enough to seek medical attention or not. This book is especially useful to anyone who is not in the medical field and needs immediate information about health or is just interested about health and disease. I highly recommend it.

Everyone should have one in their home. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is the most clear and informative family medical book I've ever seen! (my parents have a Merck Manual and the Mayo Clinic Fam.and they are absolutely useless in comparison)

The FLOW CHARTS and BETTER information in a logical format are what set this guide apart and make for intelligent deduction/self-diagnosis and possible solutions.

The American Medical Association Family Medical Guide walks you thru your symptoms via these wonderful FLOW CHARTS suggesting possible causes and on what page to find further info.

This book will enable you.

All about Kidneys
This book provides a comprehensive guide to Kidney dialysis. Very good for medical librarys.

Excellent, concise yet thorough
The book systematically describes the principles and mechanics of hemodialysis as well as peritoneal dialysis .Complications and common problems encountered in these patients are well described with ample references cited for each addressed problem.

It is written by the leaders in this field and the layout is in an easy-to-read format.
